We thought we would dedicate this page to explaining WHAT we teach - besides lots of martial arts techniques. Basically, this page outlines our philosophy.
You should know that we are really happy, caring, experienced teachers. We consider ourselves part of our community’s “village” of educators, mentors, and role models. So, with that being said... | ![]() |
Teaching Self-defense to Children Gives Us a Sense of Purpose
We at Mr. G's Ojai Valley Kenpo Karate enjoy being martial artists.
That being said... We want to add that what gives us purpose is the opportunity to teach Self Defense.
We can teach you or your child how to deal with bullies. Once a person learns self-defense skills he or she will find a new confidence and realize there may be no need to resort to violence in order to overcome aggression. Our Bully Buster curriculum has had amazing results.
![]() | We embrace revolutionary ideas like Environmental Self-defense Oh, and our school is part of a national organization of teachers called the 100. that focuses on using the martial arts to make the world a better place. We embrace ideas like Environmental Self-Defense, and Project Based Leadership Training. We’ll tell you more about these later. |
| Self Defense is More than Dealing with Personal Conflict We believe, however, that Self Defense is so much more than teaching someone how to deal with physical conflict. One of our goals is to teach our students how to overcome the bullies of the world by building a sense of self-confidence, self-esteem and self-respect. |

There are many kinds of bullies in life
Please read on to see that there are so many different kinds of bullies in our lives. Some we overcome by knowing the art of self-defense. Others are much harder to defeat because they harm us from the inside out long after the schoolyard bully has forgotten all about us.
![]() | It Won't Be a Punch or a Kick That Gets You You see, it won't be a punch or a kick that gets you. It will be your diet, or your attitude, or your indifference or how much time you spent at the office, instead of with your loved ones. |

Blocks, kicks, and punches in the big picture are a small part of self-defense.
Traditionally, self-defense has almost always had something to do with the martial techniques of defense and offense. If you took a “course in self-defense,” it would include blocking techniques, defense from grabs and holds, and possibly tactics to apply if an assailant were on top of you. You would learn how to punch properly and use your elbows for striking. You might be coached on effective striking targets and strategies for staying safe in potentially dangerous or even life-threatening situations. While all of these are part of self-defense, they are, in the big picture, a very small part.
Most people will never need - or have the opportunity - to use their martial arts skills to “defend themselves” from a violent attack. Take me for example, I have been studying the martial arts for over 16 years and I have never been attacked by someone who sincerely wanted to do me harm.
• The inability to distinguish food that makes us healthy, alert and vibrant from the food that makes us fat, unhealthy and prone to heart disease.
• The inability to solve our conflicts in a way that creates peace, harmony and mutual benefit.
• The inability to manage money.
• The inability to think positively and to expect positive outcomes.
• The inability to set meaningful, fulfilling, and challenging but obtainable goals in our lives and to work at them consistently.
• The inability to open our hearts to family, friends and other people in need.
• The inability to distinguish between what we truly need in our lives (what brings us true and long-lasting joy) and those things which we don’t need at all but simply desire as a result of clever advertising.
| Self-defense, in its truest and most authentic form, has little or nothing to do with punches, blocks, kicks and throws. It has little to do with anything “martial.” | ![]() |
The list of reasons why we need to defend ourselves in today’s world is long. The following are just examples of things that can really harm us. These are the bullies that will do us long lasting harm:
Obviously more people are hurt by their diet, by their lack of confidence, by their attitude and thinking, and by their habits of consumption than from violent attack. It’s an ongoing problem because having a negative attitude and poor health habits decreases quality of life.
The good news is that you can do something about your life right now. | |

![]() | Taking Martial Arts Training "Out of the Dojo and into the World" Our motto is “Out of the dojo (school) and into the world.” What that means to us is that we teach and practice on the mat what we want to see in the world. We are referring to things like respect, focus, courage, compassion, perseverance, anger management, and kindness. |
